I finally got round to watching Season 2, and there’s a bit where a man helps Offred/June. He even calls her by her real name. And this dude is great for doing this thing for Offred, he clearly doesn’t stand with the ideals of the state and when you think about this universe it makes sense. There are men in the pre-Gilead world who were feminists or at least knew that what was happening was fucked up. But how is Offred supposed to know which men actually hate women - and subsequently Offred herself - and which men are silent allies.
The point is, Offred can not. That’s why she can’t know if Nick is an Eye or if he genuinely cares and wants her to escape. That’s why she is shocked when this man helps her. She can’t know. There is no room for ‘not all men’ in Gilead. And though it’s a very exaggerated comparison, that’s essentially the case within our own world.
Women don’t have the luxury of ‘not all men’ in most situations because in many situations women are vulnerable. By vulnerable, I mean:
We are in the same position as Offred, “who is friend? Who is foe?” We don’t have the luxury of figuring that out when someone is following us. We don’t have the luxury of figuring that out when we decline a date (because somehow it’s our fault that he became a serial killer because we said we didn’t want to go to dinner with him). We don’t have the luxury of figuring that out when we are being groped in nightclubs. We don’t have the luxury of figuring that out when we’re being shouted at in the streets.
So I don’t really care if you’re ‘not like that’. I. Don’t. Care. Because I can’t wait to get to know you in the split second I have to escape a risky situation. I can’t wait to know you if my life and the way I live it are on the line.
You know Margaret Atwood had one rule while writing the book? That she wouldn’t include anything that hadn’t already happened or been invented. She based the book on real shit that happened in real life. She calls her book a Skeptical Fiction, however, I would say it’s also Historical Fiction.
I’m a simple woman. I find a song I like, I listen to it for three weeks uninterrupted until I find another one.
If Asgardians speak English but originate from Scandinavian folklore, then by all rights shouldn’t Thor, Loki, and company sound like they’re from Minnesota?
Oh, ya, m'name’s Loki, and I am burdened with glorious purpose, doncha know.
This would get me to watch all the Thor movies.
Thor: Aww geeze, I’m gonna need ya to hand over that tesseract there ya?
Loki: Oh, good ta see ya, too, brother, thanks for askin’ how I was and all there.
Thor: Cheese and crackers, does it seem like I’m in the mood for your games there now then yet?
